Pack Smart and Light
You’ve probably heard it a thousand times, but trust me, packing light makes all the difference. There’s nothing worse than hauling around an overstuffed carry-on that barely fits in the overhead bin. Keep essentials like a travel pillow, snacks, and your electronics in an easy-to-access spot. I also roll my clothes to save space—it works every time! Check out my article ‘Travel Smarter, packlighter‘ for more details.
Bring Your Own Snacks
Airplane food isn’t always the best, and those tiny packets of peanuts won’t keep you going for a long flight. I always pack some of my favorite snacks—granola bars, nuts, or even a sandwich. You’ll save yourself from hunger and those overpriced airport snacks. Plus, having familiar food can be a comfort on a long journey.
Dress Comfortably
Forget trying to look glamorous at 10.000 kilometers high! Go for something comfy—think stretchy pants, layers, and breathable fabrics. The temperature in airplanes is unpredictable, so having a hoodie or light jacket you can easily put on or take off is a lifesaver. Slip-on shoes are also a good idea for getting through security quickly and kicking off during the flight.
Stay Hydrated
Flying dehydrates you more than you realize, so bring a refillable water bottle and make sure to drink plenty before and during the flight. I always regret it when I don’t. Just remember that airport security won’t let you take full bottles through, so fill it up once you’re past the checkpoint.
Beat Jet Lag with a Plan
Jet lag can really throw off your vacation. A few days before your trip, try adjusting your sleep schedule to match the time zone you’re traveling to. On the flight, avoid alcohol and caffeine, and take naps strategically. I also try to get some sunlight as soon as I arrive—it really helps reset my body clock.
Upgrade Your In-Flight Entertainment
Airline entertainment systems aren’t always reliable or interesting. I’ve been on flights where the screens don’t work or the movie selection is… let’s just say, less than exciting. Download your favorite shows, podcasts, or audiobooks beforehand. I always pack noise-canceling headphones to block out cabin noise—trust me, they’re a game-changer.
Be Prepared for Security Checks
Security lines can be stressful, but a little preparation goes a long way. Wear shoes that are easy to slip off, have your liquids in a clear, quart-sized bag, and keep your electronics easily accessible. I usually place everything I’ll need for security checks (passport, phone, liquids) in one easy-to-reach pocket of my bag, so I’m not scrambling at the last minute.
Final Thoughts: Flying doesn’t have to be a hassle! With a bit of preparation and a few smart choices, you can turn a stressful experience into a smooth and enjoyable one. Follow these tips, and you’ll be breezing through your next airport adventure with confidence. Safe travels!
